BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Jonathan believes in making a difference. Having successfully established transit operations in multiple international jurisdictions, Jonathan fully appreciates how applying a transformational approach to tackle transport challenges has the ability to unlock a city’s potential.

With almost 10 years of working in the public transport industry, Jonathan commenced his career successfully bidding for the UK’s West Coast rail franchise, a 15-year contract with annual turnover of over £1bn. As one of the world’s largest rail operating contracts, competition was fierce requiring an innovative approach to efficiently delivering the very best possible service for the passenger. Subsequently, by developing a highly-compelling proposal, Jonathan successfully secured a rail operations and maintenance contract in Texas, symbolising the first UK company to enter into the US passenger rail market.

Some of the key highlights of Jonathan’s career revolve around his passion to transform transport markets in dire need of industry-redefining solutions, typically markets which lack investment or suffer from outdated networks or practices. Jonathan worked as part of a small team to monitor several international markets in which the desire to transform existed, yet the ability to deliver change did not. One momentous project for Jonathan involved the identification of a serious congestion issue experienced by employees at the Hinjewadi Business Park, 12-miles outside of Pune, India. With journey times by car taking up to 4 hours during peak periods, Jonathan worked with major employers located within the business park (including Microsoft, Infosys and Mercedes-Benz) to identify cost-effective solutions aimed at tackling the congestion issue for the 100,000+ daily commuters. With employers introducing flexible working times and conditions to spread the breadth of peak hours, and with road widening not possible, Jonathan and his team launched a high-quality shuttle bus service for commuters. While this only reduced a limited number of cars on the road, it significantly improved the quality of the commute, providing passengers with powerful air-conditioning, on-board Wifi and comfortable leather seats.

Jonathan’s greatest personal achievement however, was the development and subsequent negotiation of an unsolicited proposal for turnkey operations of Panama’s national bus network, consisting of over 1,400 buses operated by 4,000 employees. With various cultural challenges and outdated working conditions to overcome, significant improvements were made to the nation’s buses. This included the development of new legislation allowing females to obtain heavy vehicle operating licenses, enabling them to drive trucks and buses and thereby creating a whole new tranche of potential employees.

As Director of Business Development for Ascendal Group, Jonathan is responsible for Ascendal’s global business development, marketing and community engagement activities. Jonathan’s extensive experience across the global transport industry has enabled Jonathan to remain conscious that what works well in one culture does not necessarily apply to another market. He brings with him a strong passion for promoting and delivering BRT and first-mile/last-mile solutions, including demand responsive and autonomous, and is an expert on all variations of transport contracting. With a continuous striving to deliver innovative solutions to transform cities into quality operations, Jonathan believes that Ascendal’s five-pronged approach (i.e. Mobility – Innovation – Financing – Real Estate – Strategic Advisory) enables the Group to deliver unique solutions on behalf of the world’s top cities.
