Cambridge-based subsidiary, Whippet, secures contract extension

Ascendal Mobility’s 102-year-old bus operation in Cambridge, UK, has successfully secured a 12-month contract extension with the University of Cambridge. Whippet has operated the Universal bus service on behalf of the University since 2016, increasing ridership by over 400% through providing staff, students and members of the public with a quality operation along the Cambridgeshire BRT guided busway. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Universal service has proven itself to be a local lifeline, providing a regular and reliable operation for both Addenbrooke’s hospital and Eddington.

Roger Birch, General Manager for Whippet, states:

“As the official transport operator on behalf of the University of Cambridge, we are thrilled to receive this contract extension. All our efforts are being dedicated to providing a COVID-safe environment for passengers to travel safely and we are proud to transport many local front-line workers to Addenbrookes and other key local destinations. Whippet looks forward to developing ongoing innovative solutions for the University along this route both throughout this pandemic and into the future.”

Mike Davies, Transport Manager at the University of Cambridge, remarks:

“We are delighted to extend our relationship with Whippet for the provision of the Universal bus service. Whilst we are experiencing uncertain times at present, we have confidence in Whippet’s ability to provide the best possible service along this corridor.”
